You have begun an adventure that will be both memorable and rewarding.
Major building projects are always a challenge but HomeAid projects have the added elements of volunteerism and what can seem like management by committee. This document is intended to define the roles and responsibilities of the all the key players in making this project a reality. The Builder Captain Company, their Trade Partners, the Care Provider, and HomeAid all have complementary responsibilities through this entire project.
Possibly the most important secret to success is open and honest communication by all participants. We will have very different roles that require different expertise. We will need to be informed on all major activities, but we do not need to become experts on every activity related to the project. The senior operational representative of the Builder Captain Company (referred to as the Project Superintendent), a senior representative of the Care Provider agency (usually the Executive Director) and a senior representative of HomeAid Inland Empire (usually the Executive Director) will serve on a coordinating committee known as the Management Team. This team will be in regular and frequent contact with each other from the beginning to the end of the project. Each of our activities will enhance the activities of the others. There will be no need for secrets as none of us claimed to be perfect anyway. Each member of this Management Team is making a major contribution to our community and we must always respect their roles.
As an effective member of this management team your first responsibility will be to read and understand this entire Handbook. It is only human to want to focus on the section that refers to your responsibilities but it is important to understand the roles of your teammates. This Handbook is not long and you will be glad you got a general idea of what your teammates are doing. Reading this entire handbook, including all attachments and forms, will be helpful in the long run. Besides it is always good to know you will not have to do everything.
As you read through this handbook you will probably identify questions take could be addressed by your teammates. Asking is always better than guessing, so please ask.
The end result of this project will be a home that has a substantial impact on people’s lives. As we go through the frustration and joys associated with every project, keep that idea in mind. Please know that your involvement in this project is appreciated both now and for years to come.
